Summertime FUN!
Do you remember the Beach Boys song entitled “Fun, Fun, Fun”?
You can refresh your memory here, and you don’t have to own a T-Bird to relate!
There are a lot of teacher conferences that happen over the summer, and my social media feed has been full of posts from teachers having “fun, fun, fun” at these conferences.
Summer is for fun, and I hope that everyone is finding something that they enjoy and find fun to do.
The word for fun in Spanish is “divertido”, related to the words “divert” and “diversion”.
The etymology of fun is from the Old English word fun meaning “to cheat or trick”.
So, to have fun means…
…to do something that is a diversion from the ordinary or from what we normally do.
…to do something that diverts our attention from our troubles, sorrows, preoccupations, etc. and directs us more toward things that will relieve us of these burdens.
…to do something that cheats time and tricks our minds into a state of bliss and mindful musings.
What is fun to one person may not be fun to another.
So, what are some things we can do to have fun?
We have lost the true concept of having fun as it has become defined as well as lost in the modern practice of extreme thrill seeking and/or pursuing exhilarating experiences that get the blood pumping to our brains in order to ward off boredom.
What do you do for fun?
Or better yet, I should ask, what do you do to divert your attention from the ordinary to the extraordinary? Visit a new place, talk to new people, try a new food you’ve never eaten before, go a different way home than you usually do, learn something new
What do you do to cheat time and trick your mind into mindful musings?
Meditate, do yoga, read, garden, craft, wander through a museum, walk on the beach, chat with a friend, watch feel good movies?
I hope you are finding ways to have FUN, FUN, FUN this summer!
Don’t forget to make a plan, put it on your daily list of to-do’s and be sure to make time for it in your day. You’ll realize you are having more fun in life than you thought!
PS – To ALL teachers:
I hope you are having FUN, FUN, FUN all summer long and that you are not diverting too much of your attention toward school preparation, but rather away from it.
This is your time! Have FUN!
