Let’s Celebrate!

As an extremely difficult school year for all comes to a close, I call everyone together to CELEBRATE.

(key up the Celebration song by Kool and the Gang???)

The end of the year does signal a feeling of “good times” coming…a.k.a. = the summer!

Well, for some maybe. I know many school districts are having summer school to help those students who have a “learning gap” or are somehow considered “behind”.

Many teachers are celebrating because they are leaving the profession all together and don’t have to put up with the stress and unreasonable demands that are causing them poor mental and physical health.

Seniors and their families are celebrating because they have reached a milestone in their educational journey and are graduating from high school.

The etymology of the word celebrate is from Latin celebrare meaning “to assemble to honor and sing praises of”

No matter how teachers, parents, admin, students, districts
or anyone else may view this past school year,
there is always something to celebrate!

Let’s honor and sing the praises of all the teachers, students, parents and everyone in the educational system for getting through the school year the best way they knew how, with the circumstances and obstacles they faced and with the limited resources of time, money, energy and sometimes support that they received.

Celebrate, honor and praise all the little things that became big things like:

***note that these are real life examples that are true***

A teacher who saw that a child didn’t have a snack for lunch, so she shared her snack with them.

A teacher who saw that a child was having a hard time seeing the board, but whose parent can’t afford glasses, so she reached out to social services and together helped the child get free glasses.

A teacher who saw that a child was absent for several days because someone in their family passed away from COVID, so the teacher wrote a nice note of condolences to the family and gave the student extra time to make up the work.

A parent who was struggling with work, family and COVID still helped their child at night with homework, read a book to them or just asked “how are you doing, and what can I do to support you?”

A parent who sent a kind note of gratitude and loving support to their child’s struggling teacher.

A parent who shared something positive on social media about teaching and learning.

An admin who praised and supported their teachers and students by getting out into the classrooms and asking “what do you need? how can I help?”

An admin who chose every week to send a loving email of affirmation and recognition to teachers for the little things they were doing for children, the school, etc.

An admin who stepped into a classroom or cafeteria duty or car loop duty in order to give a teacher a break and not put all that burden on the P.E. teacher, art teacher or custodians.

So, LET’S CELEBRATE the good things, the good times and try not to spiral into the negative or the “woulda-coulda-shoulda muck” here at the end of the school year.

There is always something and someone to praise, honor and celebrate!
Who and what will you celebrate today?
